Cameron Norrie achieved the biggest victory of his professional journey by rallying from a set down to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had earlier defeated Alcaraz on two occasions, this victory represents Norrie's initial success over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Enormous. Extremely important for me," commented Norrie, who is now the newest UK male player in history to overcome a global number one. "Coming back from injury last year, I fell in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just aimed to embrace my performance in the latter part of the year. To get a win like this, it's the most significant victory of my career, my first win over the top player and likely the most confident athlete in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's dominant streak of nine consecutive finals and 17 consecutive Masters 1000 wins, which represented the top run of outcomes in the Spanish star's young professional path.

Game Analysis

Alcaraz seemed to be moving confidently to success early on as he eased in the initial stanza. However, Norrie steadily battled back back into the game by serving with improved accuracy and pulling the Spanish opponent into prolonged, physical points. His unceasing shot tolerance and reliability slowly took its toll.

Through most of the contest, the world number one performed well on serve but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The rising talent seemed especially uncomfortable striking his primary weapon, which has been the best shot in the sport for a large part of this year, producing 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 mistakes. On the other side, the British player offered Alcaraz very few errors, maintaining his consistency, physicality and power the entire contest while performing well on serve and selecting opportunities to force himself into the court and attack well.

Following battling for months due to a significant left forearm injury and difficulties with his game, the tennis professional dropped as far down as 91st globally this season. After making the last eight at Wimbledon and the clay-court Grand Slam round of 16 since then, this triumph reinforces the veteran's progress as he aims to return to the world's top twenty and further. The Spanish sensation, in spite of his incredible success, is has not yet master how to produce his top form in indoor conditions.
